Casio G-Shock Midnight Fog Brown Metal Casioak Watch Review (GM2100MF-5AER)

Nick Lehner

In my recent review of the "Grape Jelly" Casioak, I tried to make the case that my wife is a bigger fan of these models than I am. I thought that I was done buying these watches for myself for a while and that I would hold off until Casio releases my dream version. I didn't think that I was interested in any of the other existing models, especially not this strange brownish-copperish metal Casioak that the brand released as part of its "Midnight Fog" collection. Then I saw one in the metal at Windup Watch fair.

As often happens, the press photos don't do this model justice. A color combination that looks bland (and somewhat odd) on the website looked very attractive to me in person. I also thought that it was a color that we could both wear, so I let it stew for a week or two and ended up ordering one.

Since I've already covered the metal Casioak in detail, this review will just focus on the differences between the new brown version and the blue metal GM2100N-2A. The main purpose is to provide a few real photos to give readers a better idea of what it looks like.

The Details

Besides the obvious color change, the finish and textures are also different. The top surface of the bezel is brushed like the blue one, but the sides have a matte, sand-blasted finish, versus the polished sides on the blue. This works really well with the coppery brown color and was one of the things that made me more attracted to it in person.

Additionally, the dial has a very metallic look. it has the same vertical brushing as the blue model, but the silver/gray finish makes it look more like raw metal.

The strap features a silver metal buckle like the blue version, but the surface of the strap has a smooth, matte finish, compared to the small raised dots on the blue one.

Wearing the Midnight Fog

The legibility is not as good as my yellow model, but the because the dial and hands are lighter, it is easier to read than the blue one. The same goes for the LCD display, which changes from negative to positive, making it easier to read.

Normally I don't like how my arm hair is visible through translucent straps, but this one is so dark that it doesn't bother me.

Conclusion

The brown and gray work together much better than I expected, and make this colorway a more unique proposition. You don't see many watches in these colors, and I see myself wearing this one frequently. What is your favorite colorway? Let us know in the comments!
