In my recent review of the new yellow Solar and Bluetooth "Casioak" (officially the Casio G-Shock GAB2100C-9A), I said that it was nearly my perfect spec G-Shock, but that it lacked the high-end feel of my blue metal GM2100N-2A.

I expect at some point that Casio will expand the solar and Bluetooth capability to have metal cases, but I became impatient. Because the metal and resin Casioaks both used the same module number, I made the assumption that I could purchase a blue GAB2100-2A, and that its module would be a direct swap into my blue metal Casioak.

This would give me the functionality that I desired, as well as solve the issue of poor legibility on the blue metallic dial gm2100 with its blue and dark gray hands. I thought that the blue indicator hand of the solar model would match nicely, and its white hands would make it much more legible.

Once I found that they were available at one of my favorite dealers, I ordered the blue GAB2100-2A and patiently waited.

When the new watch arrived, I broke out my tiny screwdrivers and prepared for what I thought would take me five minutes. Unfortunately, I quickly remembered that the metal Casioaks use Allen head screws to secure their bezels and that I didn't have a small enough wrench.

I took to Google to research what size I needed and quickly found this YouTube video. At 10:23, the narrator starts to attempt a similar swap and discovers that it can't be done. He measures both modules and shows the differences and why a swap is not possible.

After checking my watches to be sure, I came to the same conclusion. So for now, I'll be sticking with my fun, bright yellow solar/Bluetooth Casioak, and the more basic, but beautiful blue metal Casioak.
