Ollee Watch Review And Installation In Casio A158

I recently came across the Ollee Watch module on Instagram. It promises to turn your classic Casio into a smartwatch. I decided to order one to try, and I picked up a Casio F91W and an A158 to have something to install it in. Since I already reviewed those watches, this article will focus on the installation and features of the Ollee Watch.

Ollee Watch First Impressions

Supply is limited, and it seems to be selling very well, since it took a few months to receive it. It arrives in a small, branded white box containing the module, NFC ship, and a sticker.

Ollee Watch Installation process

Installing it was fairly straightforward. It requires a bit of finger dexterity and patience, but it was not much harder than changing the battery on the A158. The website includes easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions and a YouTube video. I'll detail the process here to give a quick idea of how difficult it is, but I recommend using Ollee's instructions if you install one. It took me a minute to find the process, but I just had to scroll past the app installation instructions.

No tools are included, so make sure you have a small Philips screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver. A pair of tweezers will help too. Installation starts by removing 4 screws to open the caseback.

The LCD is then separated from the circuit board, which is the same process required to change the battery.

The battery contact must then be transferred to the Ollee circuit board. This is the trickiest part, but it is not too hard if you use a small screwdriver.

After that, reassembly follows the reverse process, omitting the original Casio circuit board since the Ollee Watch module completely replaces it. I elected not to install the NFC chip. It complicated the install, and I did not identify any uses for it.

Setting up the Ollee Watch

Like other Casio watches that come from the factory with Bluetooth, you can use the Ollee watch independently, but it's much easier to set up and access all its functions with the app. The pairing process was fairly straightforward.

Once paired, you can view your daily steps, temperature readings, and configure the watch. You can set up all of these in the app, including alarms for different days of the week, your location for sunset and sunrise, the backlight color, duration, and battery saver with tilt-to-wake.

Using the Ollee Watch App

After setting up the watch, the app will store your daily steps and other events, such as timing, for up to 30 days. It can also sync with Google and Apple Health apps. The A158 has a fun Easter egg that displays "CASIO" after holding the right button for 3 seconds. Ollee Watch has a similar feature.

Ollee Watch Functions

Functions include multiple alarms, timers, world time, a stopwatch, a temperature display, a tally counter, a flashlight, 3 games, and a sunrise and sunset display. They can be easily accessed by cycling through the modes using the mode button. The app can also be used to add or remove them from the queue if you know that you won't use some of them. The LCD can be configured in a variety of colors, with an auto-light option that turns on when you tilt your wrist.

Casio A158 Strap and Replacement Straps

Since the watch received an upgrade, I decided to upgrade its strap too and installed a green StrapHabit TQ18 strap. The bracelet can be easily removed with a spring bar tool.

Ollee Watch Conclusion

The Ollee Watch kit is $55, which is almost double the price of the A158. Combined with the $30 watch, the total is $85. There are other watches available with step counters for roughly the same price. I also just learned about Casio's ABL1000WE, which features a similar design to the A158. It costs $95 and doesn't require installation.

Casio A158 Watch ReviewIt lacks a few of the features of the Ollee Watch, and is much larger than the A158 at 41.6mm wide. Casio doesn't have an F91W-style watch with smart features if you prefer the resin look.

The F91W and A158 are iconic watches, and I found the installation to be a fun project. The app is easy to set up, and the easter eggs make the watch fun to wear. The next step that I want to try is installing it in one of my Farr and Swit Mixtape watches for the ultimate fun, casual watch!
