Q Timex Chronograph Two-Tone Black and Gold 40mm Watch Review - TW2W64300

When I saw that Timex had released a black and gold version of its Q Timex Chronograph, I had to have it. I hadn't been able to wear the new two-tone TQ18 beads of rice bracelets, plus it's an iconic colorway for a vintage-inspired chronograph (think John Player Special).

I had already owned and reviewed the original panda and reverse panda Q Timex Chronographs, but their cases were all silver and would not have worked with two-tone. The all-gold seconde/seconde/ Loser also wouldn't work with two-tone. I considered it for a few days and then pulled the trigger. It would allow me to try out my first two-tone watch, plus I knew that it would look great with a bunch of the StrapHabit TQ18 straps for Q Timex.

Q Timex Chronograph Two-Tone First Impressions:

I already knew that the Q Timex Chronograph had a lot of charm due to its vintage style, and highly domed plastic crystal. Adding black and gold gives it even more of a motorsports vibe. It is a bit flasher than the silver models, but it's also more fun.

Q Timex Chronograph Two-Tone Details:

The dial has a reverse panda motif but with gold subdials instead of the off-white of the original (the inverse is also available: gold with black subdials).

While the same brushed and polished angular case is used, the pushers, crown, and bezel are coated in yellow gold color.

The dial features gold text as well as polished gold indices and gold hands on the central pinion. The subdial hands are black coated, which ties things together really well.

What doesn't tie things together is a white date disc at 4:30. The location doesn't bother me on an inexpensive watch like this, but a black background with gold text would have tied things together so much better (or at least the black date disc from the standard model).

Wearing the Q Timex Chronograph Two-Tone:

The 40mm case size and lack of lugs make the Q Timex Chronograph very wearable. At 14.3 mm it is a bit thick, but a lot of that comes from the domed crystal. It's lightweight and well-balanced, so the thickness never bothered me.

As with the other models, the legibility is not great, although the gold hands do contrast the black dial a bit better. With this model, the white portions are also easier to see during the day.

The lume is not very bright in the dark, but it does work.

Q Timex Chronograph Original and Replacement Straps:

The leather straps on the Chronographs are nicer than the other Q Timex models' straps. The leather is stiff but is of nice quality. This new black and gold colorway includes a smooth black strap. There is also a stainless steel bracelet option, but I chose the strap as it was less expensive, and I knew I'd be swapping it out anyway.

I swapped it out for the two-tone Beads of Rice Bracelet and it transformed the watch.

A black FKM rubber with a gold buckle also ties it together well.

A jubilee looks great too. This makes me think about doing a two-tone jubilee too!

Straps and bracelets for this watch are also compatible with the Q Timex 38mm Reissue, or the M79 Automatic, Three Time Zone Chronograph, and GMT. Q Timex watches all have 18mm lug widths, but fairly thick lugs and square cases. Thus, you can fit a standard 18mm strap to one, but it won't look quite right. Q Timex Chronograph Two-Tone Movement:

The chronograph features a smooth sweeping second hand, lap timer function, and date. It does not feature a mechanical snap to zero like a Seiko Meca-Quartz movement. The 24-hour subdial can be useful on an automatic watch where you frequently need to set the time and date. This watch is quartz, however, so I find it less useful.

Although Timex does not list the movement maker, I believe that it's a Seiko chronograph. It is made in Japan and has the same dial layout and operation as a Seiko chronograph. For the price, it's a completely appropriate movement.

Conclusion:

I'm happy that Timex has continued to add new colorways to this fun platform. The Q Chronograph is a fun way to have a vintage racing watch feel without the expense or hassle of buying a real vintage piece. The black and gold colorway works especially well here.
