The green dial carries the full Smokey Bear treatment: the badge logo up top, "ONLY YOU" lettering, a pine tree icon low on the dial, and a 24-hour military-style track ringing the main numerals. It's a genuinely charming design that leans into the campaign's classic look without feeling like a costume. Green Super LumiNova coats the hands and numerals, and it glows strong and bright. Perfect for those afterglow hikes.
There's really nothing to dislike about it. It's cohesive, it's thoughtful, and it doesn't overplay the Smokey Bear branding to the point of kitsch.
Movement
Power comes from a Seiko NH38A automatic movement, Japanese-made and US-regulated, with a 41-hour power reserve that winds off normal wrist motion. It's a proven, dependable choice for a watch in this range.
The Warranty Is the Real Standout Of The Industry
I want to spend a little extra time on this, because it deserves it: VERO backs this watch with a 10-year, no-questions-asked warranty against any damage. Not just manufacturing defects, any damage. That's an enormous commitment for a brand at this price point, and it's honestly one of the best warranty policies I've come across in the watch space generally, let alone in this range. Past the ten years, VERO says they'll still continue offering service and support to keep the watch running to standard.
For a watch that's meant to actually get worn hiking, camping, and doing outdoor things, that kind of warranty changes the calculus entirely. You're not babying this piece in a watch box. You're supposed to bang it up a little, let the bronze patina, scuff the strap, and know that if something actually breaks, VERO has your back with essentially zero hassle. That's the kind of policy that builds real trust in a brand, and it's a big part of why I'd buy from VERO again without a second thought.
Straps
The watch ships with two straps: a 20mm leather strap with quick-release spring bars and bronze hardware, and a black canvas NATO strap, also fitted with bronze hardware. If I have one gripe, it's the leather strap. It's fine, but it's the weakest link in an otherwise excellent package, and I found myself reaching for the NATO more often. This is a strap monster in the best sense, though, so getting a new 20mm strap is easy enough. This is begging for a Sailcloth FKM hybrid strap. Rugged yet practical. The khaki version is my go-to pick for every VERO Smokey Bear Edition. The Sailcloth looks great on the front, yet still has the rubber back for when you're out adventuring. If you're looking for leather, something better than the one it comes with, the Horween Racing strap fits that bill.
Packaging
The packaging leans heavily into the 80th anniversary of Smokey Bear, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for good packaging, and VERO clearly put real thought into making the unboxing feel like part of the whole Smokey Bear experience rather than an afterthought.
Final Thoughts
I bought this during VERO's "like new" sale, and honestly, I'd do it again without hesitation. This watch showed up basically brand new. I genuinely could not find any differences between it and a fresh unit: no marks, no signs of prior handling, nothing. If you can catch one of these sales, it's worth jumping on.
The Forest Green colorway was sold out, which is exactly why I was so happy when it popped up in the like-new sale. VERO recently released a new Brilliant Blue colorway as well, and it looks genuinely impressive if green isn't your thing.
