For months, the most popular article on the StrapHabit blog has been the review of the Honda Speedometer Watch that I originally learned about on The Drive. Someone at hondawatch.com must have noticed, because I received an offer to review one of their latest creations, the Honda Space Shuttle Watch. Since I seem to be collecting Honda watches, I was interested in checking it out!

First Impressions of the Honda Space Shuttle Watch
Even compared to my Casio Type-R and vintage Speedometer Watch, this one is the most eye-catching Honda watch. It's thick and has a lot going on under its large crystal. Batteries were not installed (or included), and they were a bit tricky to install. Once I got it going, it was fun to watch.
Honda Space Shuttle Watch Details

Wearing the Honda Space Shuttle Watch
The Honda Space Shuttle watch is listed as only 34mm wide (I measured it at 38mm, with the lugs). Despite this small-sounding dimension, it wears quite large. Square or rectangular watches always wear larger, as they have more total surface area. Additionally, it's tall and thick.

The brand says that it's 42mm tall, but that's only the case. The lug-to-lug measurement (as most brands list) is a substantial 52mm. The brand also lists it at 14mm thick, which is typical dive watch territory. It's 14.8 mm thick if you include the crystal, and 15.2 mm with the lugs. The expansive crystal and depth to the dial add to the appearance of thickness.

Honda Space Shuttle Watch Bracelet and Strap
The Honda Space Shuttle watch includes a black silicone strap. It is 28mm, so your options will be limited if you'd like to swap it (24mm is the largest that StrapHabit currently sells). The included small screwdriver can be used in place of a strap-changing tool for installing it.

Honda Space Shuttle Watch Movement
The modules that power the watch sit behind a caseback with a Honda Wing logo, secured by eight screws. The time-telling portion of the watch is powered by a tiny quartz movement. That sits under the module that powers the propeller. You must first remove it, install the small 376/377 battery, and then install a larger CR2016 battery for the propeller. It's a bit tricky to do, but not impossible. After I finished, I discovered that the required tools were included in the package.

I'm not sure what the movement is, but it operates like a Seiko VH31 mechaquartz, which ticks at a higher beat rate, providing a smoother sweep of the satellite.
Honda Space Shuttle Watch Conclusion
While this isn't a watch that will appeal to traditional watch collectors, it's fun and sure to be a conversation piece. While Honda recently launched a rocket, I don't really understand its connection to this watch or to the propeller-powered shuttle. I would prefer it without the Honda branding, but it doesn't make it any less fun.
