Sometimes choosing the right gift for a friend takes significant research and brainstorming. Other times, an idea falls into your lap. When Casio recently teamed up with sneaker boutique Oneness the resulting watch was the perfect gift for my friend's 40th birthday.
He had planned a tour of Kentucky Bourbon distilleries to mark the occasion, which was the exact theme of the watch. To top it off, the watch is a G-Shock 40th anniversary model! I signed up for notifications and snapped one up as soon as they became available. I'm glad that I did because they are now sold out!
First Impressions
The special box looks (by design of course) like it should contain an expensive bottle of Bourbon. Inside, however, was the watch in a small cloth bag with a display stand.
Its amber hue looks really attractive in person. Although I was not previously familiar with the Oneness brand, the logo on the dial doesn't take anything away from the watch, and I appreciated the inspirational "what are you waiting on" phrase below the LCD screen.

Somehow this was my first time with a square G-Shock. Of course, I have extensive Casioak experience, but I had never tried its predecessor. This watch wears very similarly, with a similar thickness and a smaller width. Just change the display to digital, and square off the shape a bit, and you get the idea.
Strap
The resin strap has a gradient printed on it that shifts to a dark reddish-brown towards the end. This gives the feeling of staring into a deep glass of Bourbon.
A gold-tone buckle ties in well with the dial.
Movement
The module used is the same Casio 3229 as used in other square G-Shocks.
It features the same timing and alarm functions that you've come to expect as well as a flash alert feature that illuminates its blue backlight.
The LCD screen is a negative display. I found it a bit difficult to read (and even harder to photograph), but the gold filter applied to the screen matches well with the rest of the watch.
Conclusion
This watch can appeal to fans of Kentucky Bourbon, streetwear, or just someone who likes a cool-looking square-G. Even if you just like the watch, the colorway is attractive and unique. The clear amber hue has an attractive warmth to it that makes it fun to wear.
